Intertwining Martial Arts, Academics, & Social Work
In 2005 my son and I discovered Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Much like my educational career, this became a journey of growth and empowerment. Just as I aimed to bridge gaps in the classroom, Jiu-Jitsu became a tool for building confidence, resilience, and community. Over the 10 years we trained and competed together, I saw my son grow from a shy boy who would not speak up for himself to a confident young man who stood up for others.
I’ve applied my experience in program development and mentorship to Jiu-Jitsu, creating opportunities for personal growth and community involvement. Similar to designing curriculum, I’ve developed a coaching program that focus on science-based skill development and seeking ways to continually improve my practice.
In September 2022, I founded Grindhouse Grappling Academy in Pueblo West, CO,. As Head Coach, I oversee youth and adult programs. I’m also focused on developing future coaches at my gym and beyond. I a member of a national group of coaches who offer professional learning support and coaching camps.
Operating the gym has been a significant learning curve, requiring me to navigate business management while coaching 15 weekly classes and designing the curriculum. I bring the same problem-solving focus to sports skill development that I bring to academics.
Driven by a passion for community service, I’ve initiated benefit tournaments and fundraising seminars. These events provide accessible opportunities for youth and adults through low, donation-based entry fees. All proceeds are donated to local youth organizations, fostering a sense of community engagement and empowerment. I am sincerely grateful to my fellow gym owners and the Jiu Jitsu practitioners in our area that support this work. They are the real MVPs!
